If I’m going to splurge on a specialty donut and a donut shop, it’s going to be on an apple fritter… easily.

But turns out, these show-stoppers are actually super easy to make at home! They don’t require a yeasted dough… Simply make a batter and get to fryin’. They’re golden, crispy, and apple-cinnamon-y… They’re the perfect, fall breakfast treat!

Ingredients:

For the fritters:

  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 2 large apples, diced

  • vegetable oil, for frying

For the glaze:

  • 3 cups powdered sugar

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Directions:

Make the fritters:

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and cinnamon.

  2. Stir in the applesauce and milk until just combined.

  3. Fold in the diced apples until evenly dispersed.

  4. Heat about 2inches of oil in a skillet to about 375 degrees F. Scoop 1/3 cup of fitter batter into the oil with a rubber spatula and flatten it with the spatula. Fry for about 2-3min on one side, then flip with tongs to fry the other side for about 1-2min. They should be a deep golden brown.

  5. Remove from the oil and set on a plate with paper towels to absorb the excess oil.

  6. Continue steps 4 and 5 until all the batter is gone.

  7. Let the fritters cool.

Make the glaze:

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk and vanilla until smooth. (*1)

Glaze the fritters:

  1. Dip each side of the fritters into the glaze, then set on a wire rack to let any excess glaze drip off.

  2. Let the fritters sit out until the glaze has hardened. They’re best enjoyed fresh, day-of.

Notes:

  1. *I like the glaze to be pretty thin for these. If you like you glaze thicker, add more powdered sugar. If you want the glaze even thinner, add more milk.
